Evolution of The SmartWatch

This post was made in relation to the TI Chronos and Casio watches, The early Smartwatches. Some parts of this post removed, but this was the post in one of my other blogs that triggered the Smartwatch fever that you see today.

This is not a HandHeld Gizmo but a Gizmo that Holds your Hand and Cling to the Body. Wearable Wireless Computers. The first Smart Wristwatch according to my knowledge was created by Casio. it had many functions including a calculator and calender,

When i saw this i remember my High School friend, he had built an advanced DIY Wrist Watch with LED Display and Radio, there was a temperature display too. A Gizmo WristWatch around 1980! ... his Gizmo got many students wildly interested in Electronics. He also developed a Learning Kit 'for 555.

Phones can be Bluetooth Paired with Smart Wristwatch, both Scream when distance above 3+ feet. This will work also with a SmartHeadset when you are wearing that.

An internal supercap powered location pinging system that keeps sending signals to the tower even after battery is removed. This could also be used with SmartHeadset as a 'locate misplaced phone feature" when you have forgotten the phone at a shop, office or restaurant.

Usability and Accessibility Enhancements

Tablets have tools for Communication, Browsing and Many Utilities. It needs to be usable by very old people and very young ones as well.  They need to be affordable and Robust too. Ability to survive falls, Grime, Water and Heat. It should be usable by people having Health issues too.

Alert sounds likes chimes and rings are not enough, The Tablet must be able to yell and scream when it is far from the owner. The user needs to wear  a Bluetooth pendent with microphone .

When charge is low, it has to create a tantrum till it is fed...up. Some pricey models can have tiny wheels to move to the closest charging bunk. Some Vacuum Cleaners are able to move and recharge themselves.

When a SMS lands, it is able to read out loud and take a reply by voice and send it at once. Similarly the email could work on the tablets, all hands-free. The speakers and quality audio are on the tablet/pad and the pendent is just an additional microphone with bluetooth and vibrator with a titillate option.

Incoming  calls can move in tandem with an answering device and make loud Audio Visual Effects to get the attention of the Owner. The caller cannot wait, so the answering machine takes the call, says "please wait" and then rings the Alert Alarm Bells and even vibrates the Pendent. The Senior now can talk to the pendent and will get the caller's voice loud on the Phone. The Phone Audio has to be very good and loud.

If the room has a connected HD Monitor, even that can be used for the communication purpose. The user just needs to click the pendent to answer a call or video chat with family friends. In Business too, Large monitors and Loud Speakers can improve communication.

Smart PowerPacks or PowerBanks+ can be the Charging Stations. The Power Packs with docks can have the wheels and intelligence to recharge the device on alert, they will also recharge themselves from the mains power, whenever required.

Expensive Phone or PowerPack Models can have Drone Mode. I say this emphatically because the Dilbert Dupey develops wings after the mutation, This indicates that quad-copters, drones were predicted. It could be that, One fine Day the Tablet+ may Fly!

Online Security in Embedded Systems

These days many gadgets with embedded systems are being used. Tablets, Netbooks and Desktop Clients. Many of these are used to make secure transactions like Banking. It is also used as a Security Device for Web Applications and Website Memberships.

The secure transaction process has improved. I know there is encryption and also the NIC number of Ethernet cards etc. I have some thought, i think i will note it here. In one sentence "Make Every CPU Chip Unique with a Unerasable ROM ID Code or Signature" this can also be tied to a QR Code. A Firmware query spawned by a SSL TCP/IP action will return the CHIP ID which enables secure communication and device tracking overriding all user controls.

Online Security in Embedded Systems

Processor manufactures and Chip IP makers are standardized. The Secure CPU makers should obtain a license for secure CPU, which will be a CPU but with a Secure Transaction Chip with Unique Identification Code engraved within. Each Chip is unique and a replacement of CPU needs new authentication for all transactions. No two chips are made the same, the unique numbers are not on flash (like BIOS), but digitally etched-burnt with indelible e-ink. So when a person makes transaction his computer is more securely authorized. More security options like GPS in CPU for big transactions, these computers will be expensive too.

Coat Pocket Computer - dapj Open Design

I could find that many HandHeld Computers are Difficult to use and the User Experience is a bit like wearing Shoes two Sizes Smaller.

So i thought i make a Feedback about how small a computer could be without any Compromise from the Present PC OS or Program Base. So we can use the same things we have on the Home PC.

That lead to a Open Concept Design which is Quite Possible, I noted the Points that can give some relief from the Suffocation of small Sizes, still maintaining mobility for people used to wearing Big Coats.

Sharp Willcom W-ZERO3

I saw a Review of Sharp/Willcom W-ZERO3. Image below, the layout is good but size is a bit small. If it is 60% bigger then it could use a regular Desktop OS and Programs (muntzed). As HDD, CPU and Batteries has become smaller, efficient and Better. I think this is close to the ideal handheld.

My Notes -

I feel HandHeld Computers range from Advanced Calculators to Laptops, The have to be driven by batteries, charged by Mains, Solar, Wind Power or Dynamos. They can be carried around by a single human being or may be part of a Vehicle he uses. It can have a Wireless Web Connectivity or may just be a passive multimedia or games player.

Success of iGoogle in 2005 with Mini Web Apps and a Free App Store like System. The Desktop widgets of Yahoo, Google Desktop Search who created a Apps Shop or App Vending Store formed the ideas.

These innovations and rapid Hardware size shrinking, low power chips, flash+, wireless and broadband technology boost have lead to the Tablets you see today,

Gesture Android Tablet - Tweak and Squeeze

I was forced to Invent again, this time it is a Gesture Tablet. Tweak and Squeeze the Air above Tablet. 3D input device for Android Tablets. - 2011

A Tablet built with four embedded but slightly tilted cameras in the four corners and a dedicated ARM Input processor. This detects and interprets the 'finger gestures' to enhance the touch experience and also Sketch/Write with dummy stylus/brush.

The software is as complex as speech recognition. For Factory Workers, Thick Skinned or Burly Hands you could totally switch to Gesture Mode.

Gesture Tablet.

Even if the Tablet Sports the Gorilla Glass, a Gorilla cannot use it with a Touch Interface, no not even a Chimpanzee. So Gesture Interface in very important for Larger 10 inch tablets. Makes Text input a Breeze and Boosts Gaming and 3D Capabilities.

How would you like to Make a Painting by just a gentle Swish and Swoosh of a Paintbrush over the Tablet. Even Drum your favorite tune by beating the Air on the Top of the Tablet.

Then you could create a 3D Sculpture on a Virtual Plaster of Paris block. You just need to download the right App, chisel and chip away the Air on the Tablet. When done, print to the 3D Cloud Printer Provider, a few hours later you collect the 4 numbers of 3D Prototype Prints from the Courier Man.

Butter Fingers and Ironman Thumb Issues

Not all Men/Women/Neumen are alike. Some have movements with less control and others like Hands-on Miners or Blacksmiths have fingers with a layer of Tough Corny Coat to protect it.

We need 'Touch Gloves' or 'Touch Thimble'. These will empower even Ironman and 'The Hulk' to use a Tablet, Then only a Military Grade Space Ruggedized Version will do.

Just some study i made, only the understanding or conclusion here. For the years 2012-16. Low power consumption means we all last longer, healthy, si no, carbon footprint, Ser hombre bueno.

Tablet Types - dapj tech

Units and Metrics -

Screen Size is in Inches. Carbon or 'caramba' is the color code to emphasize the energy consumption.
Power is the zap or punch of 'P4 at 2 Giga Hz with 1GB Ram' - Let us say, this configuration packs One "Gonz".

Energy is the juice it takes on the average browsing, word processing or youtubing, in Watts.

What you saw and What you got

If a Video was created in a Lower Resolution it is no use showing it at a High Resolution. A Video created or acquired in High Resolution can be shown in any lower resolution.

Showing a Video in High Resolution in smaller devices will not help much. This is the limit of the Human Eye itself. So do not waste bandwidth and processing power in very small devices.

iGoogle Widgets and The First App Store

iGoogle the father of Web 2.0 - iGoogle shaped and inspired many technologies. To name a few, The Web UI Frameworks and the Community App Store Idea. Even though the "Desktop" was just a webpage and the apps were web widgets. - 2010

The API access could be any web app or Google Service. I made a Online Desktop in its memory. The Cloud Desktop (2017). The code is still in 2010 version, see in google code archive. I have cleaned it and put it in a Google Cloud Bucket for test,

There are some more gadgets i made and these are at dapj Gadgets. I put a lot of effort into these. My gadgets will be Floating on this Jot Desktop Site. This is a Web Desktop on JavaScript and css.

The Chumby Device posted earlier had this Chumby ARM Board. You could program the Widgets that could scroll or cycle thru the screen. Like News, Clock or Weather. The App Store was available but the device had to be configured unlike the Apps on the Phone today, which is much easier. This was the first App-Store that worked with a Touch-Screen.

Then ARM core deserves a lot of credit. but the 300MHz board you see below was an early step. The 1GHZ ARM that came a bit later makes the Tablet a powerful Web, Gaming, Office and Utility App Console.

The Desktop Computer wastes a lot of power but a HandHeld is green, sustainable. A 10" Tablet is the best way. So do not wait buy some Tablets and Netbooks and use your Desktop Computer when necessary.

All flash Field Replaceable

Make all Flash Memory in Home Appliance, Gadgets and computers - Easily Replaceable and Field Replaceable. If possible replaceable by layman like batteries.

Many people are having problems and high costs of service, as equipment and devices made over the last few years have flash that is hard to replace and source.

The only flash that can be SMT and Soldered could be the ones loaded with "Static Software or Firmware". That means that area of memory that is subjected to very less write cycles. Even Firmware that is frequently updated should be on an replaceable module.

I first experienced flash usage in a 8051 based Fuel Dispensing Unit we were developing in the late 80s. It was a SEEQ chip with 10K Full Erase/Write Cycles. it was a pin-2-pin replacement for 2732 UVPROM (kilo bytes). It later needed a piggyback timer.

Flash has developed immensely since, It lasts much longer and goes to Giga Bytes Storage. Giga Byte was BigData in the 90s.

Also Frequent software updates must be written as an overlay over the "Static Software".An External SDCARD as a database/code source for the updates.

Keep all frequently up-gradable parts of a firmware in a easily replaceable device called "DynamicWare" which includes the Interface/Internet areas and all that is susceptible, vulnerable, UI and young-and-growing sections.

So we have StaticWare Flash for OS, DynaWare Flash for Updates/Fixes/Apps. and External Flash for media/apps. The StaticWare alone can be SMT Hard Soldered into PCB, this should have enough smartness to upgrade device on Wi-FI with barebone GUI.

Gizmos and Gadgets that consume more batteries can be supplied with easily pluggable battery and spare battery with charger. This way the battery can be quick replaced when drained, rather than charging the device. This reduces system downtime.
